Proscar is a prescription drug that is used to treat symptoms of enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) among men. Proscar checks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) among males. DHT is responsible for causing enlarged prostate. Therefore, the decreased levels of DHT in your body will check the enlargement of the prostate gland.

The active ingredient in Proscar is Finasteride.

In most men, Proscar has been successful in being able to reduce the size of the prostate gland, thereby, helping them to get rid of symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Proscar blocks an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which is necessary to change testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, the size of the prostate is decreased. The effect of finasteride on the prostate lasts only as long as the medicine is taken. If it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again.

Proscar is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to Finasteride. Proscar use is contraindicated in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant.
